2018 ALTAMIRA SYMPOSIUM
Legendary classical guitarist David Russell playing excerpts of a virtuosic fantasie and traditional Scottish piece as he prepares for the Altamira Guitar symposium in Hong Kong and Shanghai in July/August 2018.
Altamira ambassadors Doug de Vries and Ken Murray playing 'Pinote' from Tres Cenas Brasileiras by Sergio Assad. Pinote is a reference to a scene in southern rural Brazil where rodeos take place, pinote being the horse's buck to dislodge its rider.
STELLA BY STARLIGHT
Doug de Vries plays his own arrangement of Stella by Starlight. An example of how well the guitar can move across genres and create a pathway of its own, here the main theme is set in G major with an improv to follow.
DOCE DO COCO
"Doce do Coco" - a classic Brazilian 'choro' song arranged here by Altamira ambassador Doug De Vries. This piece translates to "sweetness of the coconut" which refers to the popular home-made sweet in Brazil!
"Lagartixa" is a moto perpetual choro taken from the suite 'Introduced Species' played and composed by Ken Murray. Tribute to the Brazilian guitar master Doug de Vries. Ken plays a cedar top Altamira N300 in this performance.
PRELUDE FROM LUTE SUITE 4
This famous prelude by the great J.S. Bach is played so elegantly here by Altamira ambassador Rene Izquierdo. Rene plays an Altamira N3 concert guitar, a double top guitar with Brazilian rosewood back and sides.
RECIFE DOS CORAIS
Altamira ambassadors Doug de Vries and Ken Murray playing 'Recife dos Corais' from Tres Cenas Brasileiras by Sergio Assad. Recife dos Corais refers to the coral reef that lies off the northeast coast of Brazil, a natural treasure.
Doug de Vries plays his own composition "Garoto" - composed in 2003 after lengthy musings on how influential and groundbreaking the legacy of Garoto's guitar music has been in his life. Doug plays a cedar concert Altamira guitar here.
The Australian folksinger Simon MacDonald (1906-1968) spent most of his life living in country Australia. This arrangement by Ken Murray of this song is inspired by MacDonald's moving recording of this folksong, made towards the end of his life.
MADE IN FRANCE
"Made in France" is a 'valse-rumba' gypsy jazz piece composed by Bireli Lagrene. Sam O’Halloran is one of Melbourne’s up and coming jazz musicians, and plays an Altamira MO1D Gypsy Jazz guitar in this performance.
"Romance" by Jorge Morel is a beautiful piece played here by Elina Chekan. Elina is playing a custom made N1 concert guitar by Altamira, spruce top and rosewood back and sides with a 640 mm scale length.
RUNNING THE SCREE
"Running the Scree" - a Brazilian 'choro' style composition by Doug De Vries. Doug and Ken Murray are playing two Altamira 2017 concert guitars in this video - one a spruce/maple and the other a cedar/cocobolo.
Brazilian guitar icon Doug de Vries plays his own arrangement of the classic choro 'Noites Cariocas' by Jacob do Bandolim. Doug is playing an Altamira concert guitar in this video - a spruce/maple Torres style instrument.
"Lucky Strike" composed by Ken Murray was named after a close shave with a bolt of lightning. The guitaristic opening motif came first and the rest of the piece grew from this material and is inspired by Ken's love of Brazilian guitar music.
"Dansa Brasileira" is a virtuosic piece composed by Radamés Gnattali, a Brazilian composer of both classical and popular music. Rose Gonzalez is currently completing a Masters of Music and plays an Altamira L'Orfeo in this performance.
